Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
James 1:27
In 1999, Andy Stewart boarded a plane with six men from his church, setting out on a short-term mission trip to Mityana, Uganda. Their goal was simple: help build the first primary school building for Maranatha Schools. But for Andy, the trip became something far greater...it was the moment Africa captured his heart.
As he worked alongside local leaders Patrick and Eva Walusimbi, the school's directors, he saw firsthand both the deep needs and the incredible resilience of the Ugandan people. He returned home forever changed, carrying with him a passion to do more. Fast forward to 2004.
While speaking with Patrick about the growing needs of Maranatha Schools, Andy and his late wife, Susie, learned of a small, remote fishing village called Nkonya.
There, a group of 25 children gathered under a tree for school, because they had no classroom. No walls, no desks, just a desire to learn. That was the moment Andy and Susie knew they couldn’t stand by. They had to act.
Later that year, the Stewarts tucked a letter inside their Christmas cards, sharing the urgent need in Nkonya with family and friends. The response was overwhelming. Over $25,000 poured in, turning hope into action. In March 2005, they led a team of nine volunteers: men, women, and children on a journey back to Uganda. Together, they built a 3,250-square-foot classroom, a pit latrine, and a rainwater collection system.
But God’s plans were bigger than just one school.
Over the years, True Impact teams continued to build—kitchens, dormitories, homes for teachers and families, wells, security walls, and more. Then, after constructing a dormitory for the Salem Children’s Centre in Naama, the Stewarts saw another need: children who had shelter but no long-term support. That realization led them to establish True Impact Ministries as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2011 and launch a child sponsorship program.
What started with a single schoolhouse has now grown into a mission transforming hundreds of lives—one child, one home, one opportunity at a time. Today, True Impact Ministries continues to break cycles of poverty by providing education, food, shelter, and faith-based care to children in Uganda, ensuring they don’t just survive—but thrive.
